Plot holes, bad acting, and one bad ending

I had expectations for what this film was going to be like. It fell short horribly. Maybe I had too great of expectations.

The movie starts out really well and is strong for a while. As it progresses, there are plot holes. It goes through all the days in a week, and there are inconsistencies between the days. A lot of the occurrences work out as the days progress, but some of them don't, and just leave you wondering "why did they think that? they knew what really happened." Even if Sandra doesn't know what happened in the previous days, everyone else does and at points they blatantly don't seem to know about things they should. Also, Sandra will do things on a later day of the week because of something that happened earlier in the week. Why is she doing those activities if she does not know about the earlier events yet? It's tough when dealing with time, to work out all the kinks. At some points it seems like the movie works out, but then some things don't.

I thought Sandra's acting was solid, she gave a good performance. The daughters were also good little actresses. McMahon's performance was bad. He puts out nothing until the very end where it looks like he is actually showing emotion. I don't think he was well suited to the role.

The ending seemed to negate the entire point of the movie. It's the only ending that could make sense I guess, and yet it did not fit. It left all of us in the theater wondering "Is that it? That's how it ends?!" It resolves nothing and leaves you with a bad taste. The very end of the movie is also a huge cliché that I wish the movie would just have avoided.

Over all, I thought the movie was entertaining for a while. Then it lost its steam. I will probably not see it again, once is enough. It's a good movie if you don't analyze things. If you simply want to watch a movie, then maybe you'll enjoy it. However, if you prefer to also think about what you've seen, this probably isn't the movie for you.

This flick was ridiculous funny!

Yes, the story does sound ridiculous but you know what? It's a freaking movie just like those scary movies, anything goes. I laughed my butt off! I love the gordito Pony Boy, he's so adorable, funny and lovable, I can just squeeze him like a teddy bear. I really thought he was great in it just as everyone else was. The music was great and I really like the ending song, Straight from the Barrio. That's a nice cut. I really recommend this movie to anyone who wants to see an entertaining flick with music, cute rappers and vampires all roll into one. It's quite a unique film that I haven't seen before. Believe me, it's freaking funny.

I can see there are haters out there already and that doesn't surprise me. If this guy who made this movie "Get Pony BOy"...why is it that the Hollywood people keep hiring him to make more movies? It doesn't take a scientist to figure this out, he's really good at what he does my friend. You're just probably just jealous of his talent.

It is a fascinating film, but definitely not for everyone

I'm not familiar with Danish cinema, but after seeing Lars Von Trier's "Dogville" and now "How to Get Rid of the Others" I'm getting the impression that Danish intellectuals love to discuss morality and especially the question of how to deal with the stupidity and moral flaws of both yourself and others. Both films deal with this topic in an incredibly intelligent, multi-layered way.

Also like Lars Von Trier, Anders Ronnow-Klarlund seems to have been motivated by the concept of "less is more". Much of the film looks like fairly crude amateur footage, yet throughout the film I felt the touch of a genius. Almost every scene is literally filled with the sort of cynical misanthropy and arrogance many intellectuals have but rarely admit in public, yet in retrospect the film gave a somewhat comforting and powerful insight in the human psyche.

It is not a film for everyone, but you definitely don't have to be Danish to appreciate it. If you enjoyed "Dogville" and "Idiocracy", you're going to love this film !

This movie was great!!

I loved this movie!! I don't know what the other critic was talking about. Everything seemed clear and to the point to me. The characters were established and the story line was easy to figure out. I guess some people no matter how old they are should stick with Bob the Builder and Dora the Explorer. I thought it was exceptional considering size of the budget they had to work with. The effects were awesome. The costumes were so..... "Like it would be" if it were the real thing; for lack of a better way to put it. Acting was good too. As far as the only critic I can see, come on guy, it's not rocket science nor a word search. Just pay attention. Really excellent job. When's the next one??

A Great Movie for Adults and Children

When an alien comes from another planet to learn the meaning of love on Earth, it possesses the body of Ulla Harms (Paprika Steen), who is the wife of an owner of a poultry farm in Denmark. Meanwhile, the boy Carl (Jonas Wandschneider) grieves the loss of his mother, who died in a car crash, and is outcast in his school. His father Jesper Osböll (Ulrich Thomsen) wrote a bestseller about the power of love and also grieves the loss of his beloved wife. When the teacher of Carl has a health problem with salmonella, Ulla is assigned as the substitute teacher for his class. Sooner Carl and his friends discovers that Ulla is a monster from outer space, but their parents do not trust them and believe the children are fantasizing

"Vikaren" (a.k.a. "The Substitute") is a great movie for adults and children, with a witty story and great performances. The unknown Danish actress Paprika Steen has an awesome performance with her change of behavior, and her body and facial expressions are fantastic. She really makes this movie work and I regret only the cover of the DVD that misguides the genre to the viewers, indicating that it is a horror movie when it is actually a funny sci-fi adventure. The conclusion is weak and could be better and better. My vote is seven.

Welcome Back Green Dudes

Greetings again from the darkness. Reinventing a once popular franchise is always a bit of a gamble since the built-in audience will be very critical to changes and building a new audience can be extremely difficult. The secret usually lies in the ability to recapture the good parts from the original and add modern touches in order to attract new viewers.

Director Kevin Munroe delivers some witty one-liners and a couple of nice fight scenes all wrapped up in a terrific new animation style that lends itself very well to the dark side of sewers and big cities. Additionally, some complicated interaction between Leonardo and Rafael add a dimension not normally seen with the Turtles. All the necessary elements are there: the fight scenes (in keeping with the PG rating) are action packed, but with very little real violence; the bad guys are bent on world domination, even though the familiar Shredder is gone; the Turtle brothers struggle at times, but of course come together as a team when necessary; and the funny one-liners will make all ages giggle.

The downsides are the opening stage-setting scene, which will be a bit boring and hard to follow for the youngsters and the lack of any type of catchy music for the characters. Michaelangelo remains the fun-loving one, but he and Donnatello are pretty minor characters, and a big complaint is the lack of edge to Casey Jones. Instead of a hockey mask, he should probably dress as the Sta-Puff Marshmallow Man. Still, none of that takes away from a fun film with a beautiful look.

Voice acting is pretty well done by the likes of Chris Evans, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Patrick Stewart, Mako, Kevin Smith and Ziyi Zhang. So take the kids and if you were once a Turtle fan, you should treat yourself to the fine new version. Cowabunga!!

The story begins in Egypt, where Master Shake, Frylock and Meatwad are being attacked by an oversize poodle, who kills Frylock before being destroyed by Shake. Star-wipe!!!!.....

If you have never seen the series, there are little things that have been layered into the film that you might miss that can make it really enjoyable.

A few points I loved about it: The cybernetic ghost of Christmas past from the future and the plutonians play a HUGE hilarious role. I loved seeing them, and I was glad to see a little less of the mooninites, whom I don't consider very funny. There are actually a lot of twists and turns, that actually hold a kinda pseudo-plot, and as many reviewers have said already and will continue to say, as long as you walk into this not expecting much past the most glorified ATHF episode ever, you will not be disappointed.

It is wonderfully refreshing to see animators and writers who understand their audience so well, and can play so well to everything they love. These three characters and the world they live in are the finest examples of 'for the fans, by the fans' of whatever this new genereation of comedy is. I was lucky enough to see this with a packed theater of people who appreciate it, and it made all the difference.

Earth to Jasontodwillis, 150K is NOT a low budget for a short film! especially one shot on 35!!! I love the film because it's very well made, well crafted, and accomplished for any budget! The performances were quite good as well, very solid script.

This film played at Holly Shorts, I suggest catching it on the festival circuit!

It's like a Lucha Cinema "Greatest Hits" Collection!

Mil Mascaras still has charisma and looks great after all these years. The man has possibly the most recognizable rib cage in the Western World! This film is a love letter to the great Lucha classics of the Sixties and Seventies, and a fan's wish list come to life. Practically every scene is an homage to a trope from the classics. You get an Aztec Mummy, shambling Momias, wrestler vs monster scenes, plenty of ring action, sultry Aztec cult dancer, superhero wrestler HQ, some light bondage, blood and body-slams! And there are cameos from the modern legend legacy wrestlers like Hijo del Santo and Blue Demon Jr among others. You can keep your hyperactive CGI flash-cut action scenes! Give me a pack of masked wrestlers lumbering into battle with the Undead any day! The movie suffers a little from some loose editing and pacing issues. The acting ranges from quite good to, well, not so quite. I sometimes get the feeling that the screenplay looked perfect on paper, but the execution struggles to keep up with it in places. Still, the film never fails to entertain and is a heartfelt homage to a bygone classic genre, starring one of the greatest legends of that genre! How can you go wrong with that? I'm looking forward eagerly to more Lucha Cine action to come!

The best independent film I've ever seen period.

This movie hit on a truth that rang so deep in me there aren't really words to do it justice. It was really my favorite kind of movie. It was entertaining, had a great story, and was pretty fast paced. In addition I left the theater feeling uplifted, joyful and deeply moved thru having the experience of viewing this movie. I loved it. I'd give it 10 out of 10 and gladly see it again. I had actually recently seen the movie based on Dan Millman's book "Way of the Peaceful Warrior" and loved that film. I went into Spiritual Warriors thinking there wasn't much chance it would be as good as "Way of the Peaceful Warrior". However, I left the movie in complete awe of how it kind of started at the point where "Peaceful Warrior" left off and just took it way beyond. Great movie all the way around. (Both are actually)

Was expecting a little more...

But I actually liked it. Main characters are relatively well played and there are some cool (yet short) fighting scenes where Bai Ling shows some skills (a very quick scene reminds of "Equilibrium" gunning)! Her clothing (mainly) and face paintings are also worth to watch. A nice cyber-punk flick which tries to enter the Aeon Flux (etc) scene. The theme for the story (DNA) is clever but never develops much being a weak storyline. It was in this way that I was expecting more, more DNA hackers, more DNA exploitation (and explanation) and this is never delivered. A solid, complete zombie film.

I must immediately stress that critics who made the interpretation that this was a statement on the Iraq War seem to know as little about it as they do allegory. I'll write more on this later.

To put it succinctly, this movie has all that modern zombie movies are supposed to have. Incredible gore? Check. Virus zombies? Check. Biting zombies? Check. Soldiers shooting zombies? Check. A horror plot that has people falling to their own weaknesses? Check.

The shocks are there, the plot is excellent, and the acting is very, very good. My only issue with the movie, actually, was its use of some recognizable actors- casting semi-unknowns makes the movie more visceral, instead of having fans think, 'Oh, I saw that guy in...'.

Thankfully, fans of the first movie will notice that it doesn't try to ret-con anything, and the same action-focused, grainy camera work makes a welcome return. The movie moves along at a nice pace, never leaving you room to get bored.

Carina Chocano in the Los Angeles Times commented, "The director's message is less overtly political than it is allegorical -- that chaos breeds chaos and that force only serves to amplify it." Given that from the very first moment, without getting too specific, people abandoning their duties defines the movie (as it does virtually all zombie films), I would have to completely disagree. I even set upon another viewing of this movie simply for the purpose of finding an Iraq metaphor- and it's not really there; at this point, they would find a war metaphor in Disney's 'Dumbo'. Unfortunately, I'd have to say that this time, the critics are pretentiously political; so don't worry about getting preached to, as I did. If you're looking for military/force/war metaphors, look to the first film, 28 Days Later. If you're looking for an excellent, fun, gore-infested romp, watch this right afterwards.

Saw in progress version

I saw a work-in-progress version of this movie at the Hackers On Planet Earth conference earlier this year.

It was a wonderfully strange story with cool effects and locations. Basically, it's about a homeless boy who does petty crimes for a living, and lives underground with an old 'Fagan' type character, who is called "The Old Man" in the cast list, although no one says his name in the movie. The Old Man is trying to lead them to "Paradise", as he keeps saying, which is somewhere deeper in the tunnels than where they live.

The bad guy is a dirty little man who coughs up blood and cuts peoples heads off, and he is trying to get to paradise before them.

It's hard to describe the rest of it without giving too much away, but there's a normal family that the homeless boy finds as he's doing a drug deal, and he has a little sister to protect, and he fights everyone with an electric fork that shocks people to death and lots of people die.

It reminded me of The City Of Lost Children but with more action, but it still had that contemplative feel that that film had. It was a complicated story too. I feel like there's more too it that I missed.

The director talked for a bit first, and the fact that they shot in the underground tunnels and in the subway without permission added to it for me. I also was very surprised by how good the acting was, even by the hackers Phiber Optik and Emmanuel Goldstein who played weirdly formal gangsters.

I want to see it again, especially if many things have changes. The film looked done to me, but the director said he had a few months of work left.

Far more than I expected

Next is a much better movie than I expected to see, having read some of the reviews which called it disjointed and silly. Quite to the contrary, I found it deeply absorbing. I quickly picked up on the elements which must have caused some reviewers to accuse it of being disjointed, and began enjoying them. Of course silliness is part of any sci-fi story, we suspend our critical senses in that regard or we do not become sci-fi fans.

I single out one performer among a fine cast. Julianne Moore has really established herself as *the* deadpan action queen. She was a better Agent Starling than Jody Foster was, and she's a terrific, dominant presence in this film. Kudos to her for propelling herself to the top of a tough genre. She makes films more interesting to watch, by dint of her strong performances.

I read Phillip K. Dick's "The Golden Man" many years ago and still remember a lot of it. When I first began hearing about this movie I immediately flashed to it and wondered if this was a movie of that intriguing story. The answers are "yes" and "no." "The Golden Man" is a much more ordinary story, but with resounding insights on the consequences of his existence. And his skin was a compellingly attractive rich golden hue, which helped make him irresistible to women. None of that fits this new story, and was properly omitted.

What is translated so well from the written page to the screen is the government's intense interest in him (although for different reasons), its efforts to get him under official control, and the exceeding difficulty of doing so. And of course, the story ends in a wholly different way than the movie, a very satisfying and inevitable conclusion that bolsters Mr. Dick's reputation for opening the future to us.

*** OK, ONE LITTLE SPOILER ALERT *** READ NO FURTHER (unless you don't mind) ***

I just have to add, the flurry of action sequences which come like a staccato rendition of The Flight Of The Bumblebee during his escape from custody, is thoroughly delectable and brought more than one involuntary "Ha!" from the audience I saw it with, including from me. It's one of the tastiest treats in the film.

And finally, yes, I too wish I knew who the heck these terrorists were and what the heck they were trying to accomplish with their nefarious plot. But I guess that's the brave new world we live in. We just don't get to hear the bad guys' dialogue, their reasons for doing the things they do. In that way Next is giving us another insight, not dropping us cold as others have complained. The only legitimate beef I agree with is the entirely unnecessary and just plain goofy Nicholas Cage business during the final pursuit. It looks like it must have been an idea of somebody too high up among the moguls to deny, but it is a definite distraction causing "Huh? What?" moments when the action is at its most intense.

All in all, a feather in everybody's cap and a movie I fully recommend without reservation. Drama, humor, really fine action sequences, twists, great characters. As baseball great Yogi Berra once said, " Don't miss it if you can."

Not as good as I have expected

The two major disappointments when I finished watching this movie in the theater, was the plot background and the fact that it is split in two parts. Well, I understand the marketing principles and why not intrigue viewers enough to encourage them to go to the second part, but to me, it is a bit unfair. Like you go in the restaurant only to find an appetizer and to be told that other dishes will be available few days later.

The plot background is far worse than just non-original. A secret underground lab, a disaster in the form of deadly virus turning everyone there into zombies (if not killing), a group of highly professional SWAT-like heroes sent to investigate, an unwelcome member of the group, behaving strangely and suspicious, a female member who does not have any femininity at all, etc -- all possible clichés of that genre are undoubtedly here. Too strong resemblance to both of "Resident Evil"s, strong resemblance to "Doom", "Phantom Force", "Dragon Fighter", "Alien 2" isn't just annoying, but you can actually predict what would happen in next few minutes.

The special effects is nothing special. In 21st century, it's unlikely to impress viewers with the zombie jumping on walls like Spiderman; the only hope that this hole will be filled with the second part of the movie.

The bright side is a character personalities and a lots of humor, somewhat specific to the ex-USSR reality; like the military facility operator surfing the Internet in MSIE right on the control board of high-tech military radar or something; like digging the rare metals out of outdated electronic equipment in the middle of the mission, etc. Not only almost all characters try to mock and sometimes annoy each other with every single sentence, they actually succeed, and a classic love triangle helps a lot.

I'll give this movie 3 out of 10 for characters and humor, hoping that the rest of "what I think should be in the good movie" will be included in the second part.
